Scholarship for a Ph.D in Agricultural Economics
at the
University of Hohenheim, Germany.
In 2004 the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT),
together with multiple partners including the University of Hohenheim, will
initiate a project on “Facilitating the Widespread Adoption of Conservation
Agriculture in Maize-based Systems in Eastern and Southern Africa”. The
project will focus on four countries in Eastern and Southern Africa: Malawi,
Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
Within this project CIMMYT and the University of Hohenheim offer a
scholarship for the attainment of a Ph.D. in Agricultural Economics at the
University of Hohenheim in Germany. The selected candidate will initially be
expected to spend up to three months at the University of Hohenheim between
July and September 2004, after which he/she will return to the project
region to carry out thesis studies associated with the project. The doctoral
thesis will be expected to fit within the objectives of the CIMMYT project.
After completing field studies, the student will return to Germany to
complete the doctoral studies.
We seek candidates with the following characteristics:
· M.Sc. in Agricultural Economics or a related field
· Research and teaching experience in natural resources management / soil
fertility, will be advantageous
· At least two years experience working in agricultural research
(particularly in socio economic analysis, technology adoption and farm
level surveys)
· Willingness to conduct rigorous field studies for extended periods of time
· Adaptability to living and working within different cultures
Candidates should submit an application letter explaining the reasons for
interest in the scholarship, together with a curriculum vitae (maximum 4
pages) and the names and contact details of three professional referees who
may be contacted by the selection panel. Documents should preferably be
